Fed: Wheat research set back years after virus escape

Australia's wheat research has been set back by up to four years after a virus escapedin research facilities in Canberra.

Parts of the CSIRO's Black Mountain research centre and a nearby experimental farmhave been quarantined indefinitely until it's known how the wheat streak mosaic virusbecame established.

Researchers and scientists are still working through a myriad of glasshouses and researchplots, destroying crops and sterilising facilities to ensure they are clear of the virus.

The assistant chief of CSIRO Plant Industry, TJ HIGGINS, says the outbreak, and theenforced quarantine regime, will set back years of good research work.

He says the whole program is worth about $8 million a year, so it's quite a serious set back.

Investigations are continuing into how the virus, which is prevalent through the US,Russia and eastern Europe, found its way to Canberra.
